While Sony is claiming they made their goal of 2 million shipments, even in my local area I have noticed stores stocked with PS3s that aren't selling. The retailers may be buying them, but how many are actually making it into peoples living rooms? Considering the console itself looks quite nice and has everything there to offer something great, the underlying problem is most likely the high price. Would a 20% cut across the board now affect Sony so much that extra sales couldn't help it?

Analyst: Sony Missing Sales Goal By 25%?
According to a new report by Japanese analyst group Nomura Securities, Sony will only reach 75 percent of its fiscal year sales target for PlayStation 3 consoles after a lower-than-expected U.S. holiday sales season for the next-gen console.

Sony's estimated PlayStation 3 sales up to the end of March 2007 were cut from 6 million to 4.5 million by the group, with what Nomura called "poor sales" in North America through December as the leading factor cited for the drop, in the new analyst report translated by Marketwatch.

Beyond this year, the group lowered its sales for the next fiscal year (ending March 2008) from 16 million to 10 million, and from 18 million to 11 million the year following (ending March 2009), likely reflecting a lack of confidence by Nomura in the product as a whole, rather than any shorter-term supply issues.

Regarding official sales numbers, as part of its initial press conference at this year's CES Sony confirmed that the company shipped 1 million units of the PlayStation 3 through the end of 2006. However, last week's NPD sales report showed sales of 490,700 units for the period, with 687,300 units sold since its launch in November, a shortfall analysts have recently referred to as 'troubling.'

Combined with Japanese sales of 470,000, according to Enterbrain figures cited by the Marketwatch report global sales have apparently fallen short of Sony's prior goal of 2 million consoles, though the CES keynote showed Sony continuing to promise 6 million consoles sold worldwide by the end of March 2007.

Jan. 29 (Bloomberg) -- Sony Corp., the world's largest maker of video-game players, may report third-quarter profit fell 50 percent after its flagship PlayStation 3 lost market share to Nintendo Co.'s Wii.

Losses from games probably drove net income down to 84.1 billion yen ($691 million) in the three months ended Dec. 31, from a record 168.9 billion yen a year earlier, according to the median estimate of five analysts surveyed by Bloomberg. Sales at Tokyo-based Sony, which reports earnings tomorrow, probably rose 9.6 percent to 3 trillion yen.

Pois é...
Desde o início que venho falado do mau planeamento desta consola... Deixo aqui uma lista daqueles que acho os pontos + negativos da PS3
  • Não é uma consola inovador como a sua concorrente Wii;
  • A cópia descarada para pior do comando da Wii;
  • Fraca performance gráfica da mesma (onde tem estado a ser batida a toda a linha pela X360);

Tretton: PS3 will be "difficult to cost reduce"

An interview with Sony Computer Entertainment America chief Jack Tretton in the latest issue of Game Informer revealed some troubling news for consumers waiting for a lower-priced PlayStation 3. When asked point blank whether price drops for the PS3 will be "as soon or as drastic as they were for the PlayStation 2," Tretton responded with a curt, "No."

For reference, the PS2 was reduced from $299 to $199 in the United States on May 14, 2002, 565 days after the Oct. 20, 2000 release date. Using this data and Tretton's above answer, we can expect that the PS3 won't come down in price until at least June 4, 2008.

The reason for the shallower pricing curve? According to Tretton, the increased investment in R & D and hardware makes the system "a lot more difficult to cost reduce" than the PS2. "There's a heck of a lot more under the hood and it costs us more money to make it," Tretton told Game Informer. Despite this, Tretton doesn't seem to think the system's price will hurt its position in the marketplace. "I think the consumers that get their hands on a PlayStation 3 clearly see the value and not only want to buy one for $599, in some instances they're willing to pay ridiculous prices to buy one on eBay," Tretton said. (Oh really?)
